Hearings/Privilege of the
Floor: None
The following represents actions taken by the Board of Education at
a Special Meeting held on September 24, 2001 at the Senior High School.
The board:
1. HEARD a curriculum report from the Senior High School Scheduling
Committee. Connie Cunningham, chair of the foreign language department;
Carol Miner, teacher; Cathy Cassady, teacher; and Lynda
Castronovo, principal, made the presentation regarding a change in
the high school class schedule from a straight eight period day to a combination
of straight eight periods and block scheduling.
The committee wanted the board to hear its progress to date before continuing
its research and planning; after several questions from board members,
the board agreed that the committee should continue its work and come
back for further discussions in the future.
2. ADOPTED the 2001-2002 Goals. The goals are:
Student achievement:
Set building/departmental goals
Homework procedures review to continue
Pre-K committee reinstated
AIS strategies will be continued
Annual goals:
Implement the state's SAVE legislation
Develop an annual budget
Continue to improve communications
Negotiate employee contracts
Begin review of all board policies
Building project:
Complete phase 1 at the secondary schools
Begin phase 2 at the four elementary schools
3. WITHDREW and AMENDED school tax rolls to make revisions.
4. DISCUSSED the upcoming NYSSBA conference in Buffalo. Board members
Pam Carbone, Dan Magruder and Margaret Smith and Superintendent
Michael J. Marcelle are attending
.
5. TABLED a motion to select a voting delegate and alternate for
NYSSBA Annual Convention (October 18-21, Buffalo, NY).
6. Communications
a. ACCEPTED the letter of resignation of Cindy Orlando,
school monitor (Glendaal School), effective Sept. 1, 2001.
b. ACCEPTED the letter of resignation of Althea M. Cootfair,
school monitor (Sacandaga School), effective Sept. 7, 2001, with appreciation
for her service to the district.
c. ACCEPTED the letter of resignation of Paula Smith, school
monitor (Glendaal School), effective June 30, 2001, with appreciation
for her service to the district.
7. Routine Business
a. Staffing
All appointments with an * are conditioned on the school districts
receipt of clearance for the employee from the State Education Department
following a criminal history records check in accordance with the provision
of Education Law §3035.
1. APPROVED* the probationary appointment of Sharyll J. Keller
as Junior High/Middle School principal, effective on or about October
22, 2001 through on or about October 21, 2004, with 2001-2002 salary at
the annual rate of $78,000. Mrs. Keller has permanent certification.
2. APPROVED the list of teachers salary adjustments for 2001-2002,
dated September 24, as submitted.
3. APPROVED the following

4. APPROVED the part-time appointment of Martella VanDeBogart
as teacher aide (Junior High), effective September 25, 2001 through June
30, 2002, with 2001-2002 salary to be at the rate of $7.90/hour (Step
5, 4.5 hours/week).
5. APPROVED the change in assignment of Sharon Dereski,
school monitor (Junior High) from 3 hours/day to 2.5 hours/day, effective
September 25, 2001 through June 30, 2002, with no change in her current
rate of pay, in order for her to accept an increase in her Teaching Assistant
assignment (Junior High).
6. APPROVED the increase in assignment of Martella VanDeBogart,
school monitor (Junior High) from 3.0 hours/day to 3.5 hours/day, effective
September 25, 2001 through June 30, 2002, with no change in her current
rate of pay.
7. APPROVED* the part-time appointment of Andreina Giovannone
as school monitor (Glendaal), effective September 24, 2001 through June
30, 2002, with 2001-2002 salary to be at the hourly rate of $7.10/hour
(Step 1, 1.67 hrs/day).
8. APPROVED* the part-time appointment of Chester Kielkowski
as school monitor (Glendaal), effective September 24, 2001 through June
30, 2002, with 2001-2002 salary to be at the hourly rate of $7.10 (Step
1, 1.67 hrs/day).
9. APPROVED* the addition of Kevin Griffith (laborer) and
Jesus Galarza (cleaner) to the list of substitute employees for
Building & Grounds.
b. APPROVED the placement of children with disabilities
c. APPROVED bids for the purchase of classroom furniture for the
high school science wing for $34,667.52 from these vendors:
Gillespie ($22,179.17); Accent Furniture ($1,808.15); and K-Log ($10,680.20).
