Concerns were expressed
regarding the committeeÕs original charge. Are we doing what we should be
doing? Are all members voices
being heard?
Concern was also expressed
over new home developments in Glenville.
How many new students will this mean entering the district?
A question was raised about
what the new committee being formed (K-5 Instructional Organization Committee)
will be doing? How does this
affect our committee?
The facilities advisory committee
is primarily involved with looking at facilities maintenance, upgrading and new
construction. This Committee is
looking at what needs ÒfixingÓ in the district and how this will fit into the 5
year plan required by NYS Ed. Dept.
It was determined that the
facilities committee will still be touring buildings through June and will need
to meet again after that to prioritize facility needs and prepare a written
report the BOE.
Other comments and concerns
that were expressed include: health and safety issues, money budgeted
specifically for technology, money
budgeted specifically for maintenance, and should technology remain part of the
H.S. curriculum.
The committee then had a
tour of the Glen Worden Elementary School. The Principal, Jim Dunham pointed
out the needs of this facility.
q
The new library roof
facing the sidewalk is dangerous.
The metal roof allows sheets of ice to build up and then come crashing
down on the sidewalk used by students to get to the bus circle.
q
There are numerous
cracks in the parking lot. A
crumbling entranceway needs repaving.
q
The external speakers
of the building do not work creating a safety hazard since classes meeting
outside cannot hear PA announcements.
q
There are problems with
the canopy over the kitchen area.
q
The chimney needs
repair
q
The basement access has
a slide bolt which is currently illegal (a safety hazard). There is no crash
bar.
q
The athletic field is
built over the leach field (sand) and is a Òdust bowlÓ during dry weather.
q
The back entrance to
the playground is cracked and is unsafe for wheelchairs.
q
The playground needs
reseeding.
q
The basketball court
needs enlarging and repaving.
q
The outside wall of the
gym needs patching and repair.
q
The outside door to the
gym needs to be changed for safety.
q
The ramp from the
hallway to the outside needs replacing
q
A new outside structure
needs to be built to house lawnmowers etc.
q
Exterior brick work
needs repair.
q
The interior fire alarm
system cannot be heard in all classrooms.
q
Windows are very
difficult to open in the new classrooms and they do not lock.
q
The hallways need new
speakers.
q
In the old
classrooms:
q
Bathroom fixtures need
replacing
q
Black boards need
replacing
q
Windows need to be
re-balanced.
q
Counter surfaces need
replacing.
q
Shades need replacing
q
Carpets, etc. need to
be cleaned.
q
In the Gym:
q
The divider door does
not work and should be removed if not wanted.
q
The floors should be
re-varnished more often.
q
Need an additional
changing room (one for each gender).
q
Repair heat registers.
q
In the cafeteria:
q
Get a new Dishwasher or
remove it.
q
Lavatories: All need
to be re-done. Fixtures, doors
etc.
q
Roof in new section- The
roof continues to leak. It is
under warranty and the contractor is under a Ò2 hourÓ call when the roof leaks
again.
The committee returned to the library following the tour for a discussion on the previous visit to Glendaal.
Glendaal has similar problems to Glen Worden, windows etc.
There is a desire to have doors between certain classrooms installed. To do this the cork tiles on the walls that contain asbestos in the adhesive needs to be replaced.
The P.A. system needs to be replaced (currently not working adequately).
Blinds are needed in classrooms.
It was suggested that all schools have an integrated P.A., phone, security and voice mail system.
The outside, back concrete ÒapronsÓ need repair
The basketball court needs to be paved.
A top priority for Glendaal is the replacement of the existing wood playground with a new structure. A design has been selected from the Miracle Recreation Equip. Co. At a 30% discount this playground would cost $56,000. If it is done as part of a district wide project then 70% of this cost would be aid-able.
A changing room for each gender for PE is also needed.
New white boards/chalkboards are also needed in many classrooms.
Principal , Ann Peluso said she would go back to her staff and prioritize needs.
Other items discussed for the district as a
whole:
A request was made for copies of the existing 5 year plan.
A suggestion was made to get a professional to come up a security plan for the district.
New location for bus garage. A suggestion was made to move the bus garage behind the district offices or possibly look beyond school grounds for new bus garage site.
Tear down existing facility for buses.
A discussion on the possible location of a stadium at Maalwyck park was tabled until the next meeting.
Future meetings:
June 1 High School fields and Tennis courts
June 15 District office and other fields
