Scotia-Glenville Board of Education appoints Maureen Long as director of curriculum and instruction

The Board of Education today appointed Maureen A. Long as the school district’s new director of curriculum and instruction. She is expected to begin her duties Jan. 1. Her salary will be $105,000.

“We are very pleased to have an administrator of Ms. Long’s caliber joining our team at Scotia-Glenville,” said Superintendent Susan M. Swartz. “She will be a tremendous partner as we push ahead with several initiatives this year and into the future.”

Long, 41, replaces Joseph F. Kavanaugh, who retired in August after 28 years at Scotia-Glenville, including the last six years as director of curriculum and instruction. She was chosen from a pool of 57 applicants.

Since March 2008, Long has been the chief of curriculum, instruction and assessment at the Coxsackie-Athens Central School District in Greene County.

She was attracted to Scotia-Glenville because “what I have seen is a district that recognizes the importance of education and the positive impact that it has on students and the community,” she said. “Each and every individual I have encountered – administrators, teachers, staff, parents and board members – is genuinely committed to the well-being and success of the students.”

She said she is looking forward to working with the Scotia-Glenville community.

Long holds a master’s degree in education from the Sage Graduate School in Troy and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and business from the College of St. Rose. She received administrative training at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. She is currently working on a doctoral degree at Sage.

She began her career as a middle school math teacher at the Gloversville City School District for four years. She then worked as a special education teacher in the Troy City School District for six years.While at Troy, she was also the secondary chairperson of the Committee on Special Education.

She then served as CSE chairperson at the North Greenbush Common School District for three years and curriculum coordinator and math and special education teacher at the Wynantskill Union Free School District for eight years.

Long and her husband, Robert, have three children – Emily, a high school sophomore; Steven, a high school freshman; and Delaney, a grade 2 student. All attend school in the Averill Park Central School District. The family lives in North Greenbush.
