FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 1/30/09:

Tech Valley High School information tour to move to Schenectady County

SCOTIA -The information session tour on Tech Valley High School will make its way to Scotia on Tuesday.
An information session regional public high school be conducted on February 3, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Scotia-Glenville High School, 1 Tartan Way (Sacandaga Road - Route 147) in Scotia.

Tech Valley High is a first-of-its-kind public high school located in Rensselaer. It draws students from Scotia-Glenville, Schenectady, Schalmont, Niskayuna, Mohonasen, Guilderland, Sharon Springs, Voorheesville and other schools throughout the seven-county Capital Region.

All interested parents and eighth grade students should attend. Previous information sessions conducted in the last few weeks have drawn 82 potential students and their families.

The High School – funded through a partnership between Capital Region BOCES and Questar III – teaches students 21st century job skills through project-based learning. The school is focused on math-science and technology, but ensures students have a well-rounded education.

Approximately 77 students currently attend the ninth and tenth grades at the school. The freshmen class for the 2009-10 school year is currently being recruited.

Recent projects include learning biogenetics – specifically about diabetes and what is being developed to combat the sweeping health problem – and studying Chinese Calligraphy works under the tutelage of a local master artist who emigrated from China two decades ago.

Created in 2007 as the first Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant-funded public school, TVHS draws students from 48 school districts in the Capital Region BOCES and Questar III service areas - Albany, Columbia, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Schoharie, Saratoga and Greene counties.

Students are bused to the school by their home-districts and graduate from TVHS with a Regents or Advanced Regents diploma.

Tech Valley High’s course of study is bolstered by the school’s connection to area businesses and universities working on the cutting edge of science, math and technology. TVHS’ academically rigorous college-preparatory curriculum develops an appreciation for the technologies for which Tech Valley is recognized: biotechnology, nanotechnology, information technology, energy technology and advanced materials.

A second session is also planned for next week on February 5, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Tech Valley High, One Global View, Suite 2 in Rensselaer.
