Recognition of Retiring Instructional Personnel: James Connolly, High School Business Education Teacher; Linden Gregory, Districtwide Music Teacher; Patricia Morales, Elementary Special Education Teacher; and Denise Reed, Elementary Teacher

James R. Connolly

Jim Connolly will retire after 30 years of service to the district. Mr. ConnollyÕs love for SG and his students is readily evident in all that he did to motivate students to be successful --not just in his classes, but in every aspect of their academic lives. As a teacher in the Business department, he spent his days working with students to prepare them to enter the world of business.

As well known as he has been for his Business students, Mr. Connolly has been equally known for his huge contribution to the success of our track teams. His commitment to these teams and his tireless desire to work with individual runners to compete at the highest level has meant that many of his runners have gone on to win scholarships and places on Division I track teams in their college careers. This spring alone, he had more than 100 students go out for the track team. His athletes and business students continuously return to the high school after graduation to visit him.

There are many things that are legendary about Mr. Connolly: Most obvious to all who know him is his work ethic. Ever since he came to SG, Mr. Connolly found ways to be a teacher and a businessman. For years, he ran the school store -- stopping each morning on his way from his home in Delmar to pick up huge trays of freshly baked pastries and donuts to sell to students. He was instrumental in creating the highly successful Craft Fair that DECA/FBLA hosts at the high school every holiday season.

When he became the Business Department chair, he gave up the school store, but kept the school juice machine stocked with juice and ice tea as part of his service to the kids at the high school. Every penny that the juice machine earned went right back to our kids. The juice machine paid for buses for field trips, covered the cost of materials for various school and classroom projects, and supported student programs during tough budget times.

Mr. ConnollyÕs passion for track and field will keep him in the Scotia Glenville family as he returns to coach our track athletes; but his wife Karen has many things planned for his retirement: a long Òhoney doÓ list and trips to exciting places are among her top priorities. Congratulations, Jim, and best wishes on your retirement!

Linden Gregory

For the past 29 years, Linden Gregory has been a pivotal force in the band instrumental music education program at Scotia-Glenville. Until 1994, Mr. Gregory single-handedly taught the junior high and senior high band programs, as well as the jazz bands. Looking forward to a change, he became the elementary band instrumental director in 1994. Since that time, he has started over 1,400 students on band instruments. Somewhere in there --we also had a budget cut; and Mr. Gregory served as the string and band instrumental teacher for a brief time at the elementary level!! Several of Mr. GregoryÕs students have gone on to professional careers in the field of music.

Prior to his Scotia life, Linden played in the United States Army Band before teaching instrumental music in all schools of the Schenectady City system.

Linden also has another life: When he is not playing with Harmony, his band, skiing or golfing, he teaches private instrumental students, plays with major pit orchestras at SPAC, SLOC, and Proctors. He has also played with the Capital Region Wind Ensemble, the Schenectady Symphony, and the Albany Symphony. He still finds time for his first priority -- his family. Linden and his wife, Risa, have three children: Allison, a teacher, son-in-law, Chris, also a teacher, son Brett, himself a successful professional musician, and Darren, soon to go off to college to pursue a career in the music industry. Mr. Gregory, on behalf of the Scotia-Glenville community, we thank you for all you have given us over the past 29 years. Congratulations on your retirement!

Patricia A. Morales

Pat Morales has been a special education teacher for 32 years. Her career began in the inner city schools of Buffalo. Appropriately enough the first school she taught at was named School One. She stayed in her hometown of Buffalo for eight more years, at which time she moved to the Capital District. After a brief stint at Shenendehowa, Pat joined the staff at Sacandaga Elementary School and has been there ever since.

Pat is well respected by the students and staff. She is devoted to her students and has conducted some of her best teaching during their lunch times. Pat attends her studentÕs baseball games, takes them out for their birthdays, buys supplies for them, visits them in the hospital, and plans parties to celebrate their hard work on State exams. The time Pat has spent together with her students has created bonds that have lasted over many years. Her students are known to return to visit her even after they graduate from high school. PatÕs longevity in Scotia is such that she has had the children of former students. She has a unique way of understanding each child. This is evident in how each student has shown an increase in self-worth and self-motivation leading to successful outcomes.

Professionally, Pat has been a vital mentor to all. She embraces all staff members and helps them feel like an integral part of the team to meet the goals of each child. Pat is always the first to think outside of the box and is able to come up with new ways to address old problems. Personally, her kind, gentle way has helped many a person. She is an individual who, no matter what size the problem, will make you walk away knowing it will all work out.

Her kind, soothing and thoughtful presence has been a constant in our daily lives and will be felt deeply in the halls of Sacandaga come next September.

Congratulations, Pat, on your retirement! We will miss you!!

Denise M. Reed

ÒA teacher affects eternity, he can never tell where his influence stops.Ó This quote is a true representation of the 24 years Denise Reed has dedicated to education that will live on in her students for eternity.

Denise began her teaching career in 1982 at the Newark Central School District, Newark New York. She joined the Scotia-Glenville staff in 1987 as a special education teacher at Glendaal. She taught in the learning center for 2 years and in 1989 moved into a third grade teaching position. She has remained in this position for the past 17 years.

Throughout her teaching career, she has served as a member of various district and building committees such as SDM, ELA and Math. She has volunteered to score numerous State assessments, chaperoned Prime Time Reading for many years, and piloted both a math and reading series. Denise has also volunteered her time with building programs, initiatives and committees that are too numerous to list.

Throughout her career at Scotia-Glenville, Denise has had the opportunity to provide guidance and share her knowledge, skills, and expertise with new teachers in the profession as a buddy teacher and a cooperating teacher for student teachers. Denise designed a whole language curriculum for reading, provided training to other staff members and presented her ideas and teaching techniques to the Board of Education.

Denise displays wonderful instructional strategies and practices. She had established a positive classroom environment that has maximized learning in the classroom. She has always been a team player and displayed positive relationships not only with other staff members, but also with students, parents, and administration.

So many people Denise has come in contact with have referred to her as an Òexcellent and compassionate teacher.Ó If you talk with her colleagues, you will hear her described as a teacher who is committed to her profession, is hardworking and dedicated, has a high level of enthusiasm in the classroom, and above all else -- she is a role model.

For many years, prior to working in the school setting, Denise stayed at home with her daughters Erica and Lindsay. She was actively involved in their education and extra-curricular activities. Upon her retirement, Denise and her husband, Leon, look forward to spending time with their family. Many trips will be made to California to visit Erica and her husband Rip and their two children Ella and Reed. They will also plan many trips to Virginia to visit Lindsay and her husband Scott. We will miss Denise and wish her the best in retirement. Congratulations, Denise!!

Recognition of the Class of 2006 and Outstanding Student Leadership:

Chelsey Wentworth, Howard Eddy, Inneke Carmola, Peter Muller, and

Chelsea Welsh

Chelsey Wentworth

Chelsey is a top student in every sense of the word. She strives for excellence in all of her endeavors. She is organized, curious and always requests the most difficult classes available. She will graduate in the top 5% of the Class of 2006 with a GPA of 96.510. She is a member of the National Honor Society.

A very impressive aspect of Chelsey is her mature approach to finding balance in her life. She is a leader on the basketball and volleyball court and has been a valuable member of those varsity programs throughout her high school career. For the past two years, she was named co-captain of the varsity volleyball team.

Chelsey has been involved in the GIVE Program during her high school career. She has been a Key Caller for the last two years. As a sophomore, Chelsey and a friend proposed a new service-learning program named Adaptive Sports in which student volunteers assist youth with multiple disabilities in soccer and basketball activities. As co-director of this successful program, she is in charge of recruiting volunteers, scheduling transportation, compiling service hours, and overall management of the student volunteers.

Chelsey has also contributed to her community out of school. In the summer of 2003, she initiated a neighborhood-wide blanket drive for the Schenectady City Mission. Last summer, she and her friends collected Ògently-usedÓ books and games from local neighborhoods. More than 1600 books and 250 games were donated to the new City Mission shelter.

Chelsey is a rare blend of maturity, competence and compassion. She will attend Nazareth College in the fall with a major in Special Education.

We wish you the best in your future, Chelsey. Congratulations!

Howard Eddy

Quiet, unassuming, and very bright are words that best describe Howard Eddy. Accelerated in middle school for math and science, he has consistently challenged himself throughout high school. As a junior, he enrolled in both Physics and Advanced Placement Biology. This year, he took AP Physics.

Low key in person, but aggressive on the field -- Howard has been involved in football all four years as offensive/defensive tackle, lettering in the sport for two years. His coaches describe him as Òcompassionate, loyal and mature beyond his yearsÓ. Howard always Òworks for the better of the team.Ó He hopes to continue playing football in college, although he readily admits that academics are his first priority.

Howard has also been involved in our school's community service learning organization (GIVE). He has been a part of ÒKey CallsÓ -- where he makes a weekly phone call to a local senior citizen to check in on him and be a friendly voice! He also volunteers for the adaptive sports program helping physically disabled students to play a variety of sports games. His patience and gentle manner make him a well-liked leader for the participants.

Howard will graduate this June with an advanced Regents diploma, having completed five credits in science, six credits in math, four credits in French, and four advanced placement classes. He ranks in the top 10% of the class with a GPA of 93.244.

He will attend RPI in the fall with a major in engineering. Congratulations, Howard!

Inneke Carmola

An extremely bright and conscientious student, Inneke is also a three-sport athlete and highly involved in her school community. Academically, Inneke is second in the Class of 2006 with a GPA of 96.953. She has taken every honors class available to her and has been advanced in math and science since the seventh grade. This year, she is enrolled in four advanced placement courses and foreign language IV that grants her college credit as well. She is the President of the Student Senate, a community service director, and the captain of three varsity level athletic teams. Inneke has provided the most volunteer hours in the whole school through our service-learning program, GIVE.

Inneke has been selected and voted by her peers for these leadership roles -- not only because she is highly capable, but because she is also extremely personable. She is warm, caring, interested in others and always enjoys a good laugh. Inneke has impeccable organizational skills. She completes all work asked of her and then she creatively thinks of things that she could add. Managing her schedule with the amount of responsibility she has is impressive.

Teachers comment that Inneke is mature beyond her years. Inneke sets high goals and standards for herself and provides an excellent role model for other students in the classroom. She works well in groups as an encourager and motivator. She knows how to bring out the best in people and herself. Above all, Inneke is humble and selfless. She involves herself in countless activities not to build an impressive resume, but because she truly wants to make a difference in the world.

Inneke will attend Lehigh University in the fall with a major in the sciences. Congratulations, Inneke!

Peter Muller:

Peter's boundless energy and quick smile will pick anyone up, and his genuine caring for others and willingness to assist in any way possible makes him a joy to be around.

Peter is the number 1 student in the Class of 2006 with a GPA of 98.170. Peter took every AP and Honors course offered at Scotia-Glenville and truly was a joy to teach. PeterÕs greatest talent is his ability to share his knowledge/expertise with his classmates without flaunting his phenomenal abilities. No one feels ÒstupidÓ around Peter, because his manner is so caring. Peter has unlimited potential.

Outside the classroom, Peter is a ubiquitous presence in the high school. Peter has maintained perfect attendance for his four years of high school. Each morning for the last two years, Peter has been the voice of SGHS as he reads the announcements for the day. He has been a highly visible and talented member of the Drama Club. There seems to be no role he cannot play Ð from comedy to drama, from school shows to those in the community, from straight shows to musical theater.

In 9th grade, he became instrumental in helping to start the American Cancer SocietyÕs Relay for Life in Scotia Ð and in the past three years, we have grown from one student team the first year to over twenty teams currently. Revenue raised has gone from $20,000 to $75,000 this year Ð the rise, in part, was caused by PeterÕs enthusiastic recruitment of others Ð both in and out of school.

Peter is also President of our high school SADD group; and under his leadership, the club has become much more active, and grown in size and stature.

Peter will attend Fordham University in the fall majoring in musical theater and mathematics. Congratulations, Peter, and best wishes in your future!

Chelsea Welsh

Chelsea entered ninth grade as a quiet and polite young lady. Chelsea always did the right thing and did not call attention to herself. Over the years, her intense determination to succeed at the highest level possible has been noticed time after time by her teachers. She has commanded the respect of her teachers and her peers.

Chelsea took every possible Honors, AP, and accelerated course that she could. This year, every course she is taking has the potential for college credit. She has wanted to study medicine for a long time. All of her academic decisions are based on what will bring her closer to that goal. Her dream is to enter the field of medicine and to become a doctor.

A member of the varsity field hockey, swimming and lacrosse teams, Chelsea is an extremely committed athlete. Chelsea doesnÕt care about the external recognition. She is an outstanding field hockey goalie. Her coach stated, ÒChelsea physically dominates her team. She is the most conditioned and fastest and is always striving to get betterÓ. Her position as goalie makes Chelsea take a leadership role, which she has done consistently throughout her career. Our field hockey team has often not had highly successful seasons. Her will to succeed and to do her best for the team is obvious. She does what she does for the love of the game, not for any recognition.

Chelsea will graduate in the top 10% of the Class of 2006. Her GPA is 92.813. She is superbly prepared academically; she is highly motivated and athletically skilled and fit.

Chelsea will attend Ithaca College in the fall majoring in Athletic Training leading to a pre-med program. Congratulations, Chelsea!

UPDATE: ENROLLMENT AND EXCEPTIONS TO ATTENDANCE BOUNDARIES

Superintendent Swartz gave a brief update to the Board on the status of enrollment. She reported that several Kindergarten students are still wait-listed and several have been placed in other elementary schools. She discussed the issue of ÒexceptionsÓ (students attending a school other than the school they would normally attend, due to the request of the parents or at the request of the District). She also discussed the issue of changing attendance boundaries. She stated that the District would need to gather data, study recommendations, and try to formulate a recommendation by early fall. She also discussed the need for updated census data and the possibility of centralized registration. The Board discussed this issue at length and asked that Superintendent Swartz provide a weekly update on this issue.
